FROM THE UNITED NATIONS’ STAFF VOICES SERIES- A MESSAGE IN A HEART AND A BLUE HEART SCARF

Every day is a special day at the United Nations’ Guided Tours Unit. This week has been an extra special one. I had the chance to wear a beautiful scarf by the luxury fashion label Beulah London which has joined UNODC in its

Blue Heart Campaign

against Human Trafficking.

Every day my tour starts in the General Assembly Hall, where I talk about its work and the work of the Organization. I continue by talking about disarmament and then stop at the Universal Declaration of Human Rights exhibit. All 30 articles are on display. I pause for a moment and say: “Today I am wearing a special scarf to bring awareness of the United Nations Blue Heart Campaign. Does anybody know it?” Stunned faces look at me as if I asked the most difficult question in the world. “It is about the awareness campaign on human trafficking”. I continue by asking, “What is human trafficking?”

“Sexual slaves,” one visitor says. “People looking for a better future,” says another. Yes, “it

is the trade in humans, most commonly for the purpose of sexual slavery, forced labour or for the extraction of organs. Often victims don’t realize they are going to be exploited when they are approached by friends or family members with the false promise of employment in a faraway country. Trafficking is a lucrative industry, representing an estimated $32 billion per year in international trade. The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 2.4 million people throughout the world who are victims of forced labour as a result of human trafficking. Half of the victims are children”. More stunned faces. “How many millions?” one visitor asks. Silence. “2.4 million,” I say.

And I think to myself, “One more person who might google human trafficking and the blue heart campaign later today.”

I continue my talk, “Almost every country in the world is affected by human trafficking, as a country of origin, transit or destination for victims. UNODC (the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), is the guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its Protocols. Its job is to assist governments in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons.”

At this point my tour group and I have been standing in front of the Universal Declaration of Human rights for about 15 minutes. I am going to be late again, I tell myself! And I cannot leave just yet as suddenly, women and young girls in the group comment on the scarf by saying how beautiful it is and ask if they can touch it. It is a bright wool and silk blend scarf with blue hearts printed on it and soft to the touch.

The visit continues and ends within one hour. By the end of the tour, I share my twitter address (@visitunfrancesc) with my visitors and invite them to like and follow the

page. “It was a pleasure to guide you today. Thank you for visiting the United Nations’ Headquarters.”

And, off I go for my next tour where I hope to continue raising awareness about human trafficking and the Blue Heart Campaign.

We are so impressed and inspired by the phenomenal work being done by Michael Angelo and the Somaly Mam Foundation that we wanted to share their story. They definitely share the same vision as The Beulah Trust! Mr. Angelo, a top New York hair stylist, has partnered with the foundation to teach a number of victims of the sex trade the art of hairstyling. He began this journey in 2006 when he travelled to Cambodia to meet with Somaly Mam-herself a former sex trade victim. Since then he has made frequent trips back to Cambodia to directly teach a rotating roster of girls rescued from brothels the skillset of a hairdresser and makeup artist so they can create a sustainable income for themselves. The Angelo/Mam scheme seems to be working wonderfully as Neang Hok, a survivor of sex slavery, owns a successful salon that employs other survivors while Somaly Mam is in the process of building a salon near Angkor Wat that will be run by survivors and cater to a client roster of locals and tourists. Still reeling from the devastation of the Khmer Rouge Tragedy, the Cambodian landscape is rife with human trafficking horror stories- even toddlers are frequently sold into the sex trade. Mystic cultural lore decries that sleeping with a virgin brings good luck and health so there is an incredibly high rate of local men as well as tourists who frequent the country’s brothels. However it is important to remember that human trafficking is a worldwide epidemic. According to the U.S. Department of State, there are an estimated 27 million victims worldwide.

Like Michael Angelo and Somaly Mam, The Beulah Trust shares the goal of helping victims of human trafficking find a way to create a sustainable income and become self-sufficient. We aim to facilitate training and education schemes, along with the necessary support and guidance, to enable vulnerable women to discover their passions and develop a fulfilling career. 10% of profits from the sale of a majority of our accessories are donated to the trust. This dazzling portrait of starlet and front-row fixture Dita Von Teese particularly caught our eye as the fashion icon is decked out in a fiery red dress- one of Beulah’s signature colours. We could not be more honoured that during last week’s United Nations General Assembly high-level meeting on Improving the Coordination of Efforts against Trafficking Persons, UN tour guides started wearing Beulah’s Blue Heart Print scarves.

The guides will continue to sport the scarves until the end of the month when the General Assembly building closes to the public. In addition to showing their allegiance to the cause through their wardrobe, the tour guides will be sharing a series of stories about victims of trafficking with their groups.

Today we’re inspired by… THE GREAT GATSBY!

We can’t contain our excitement for the UK release of Baz Luhrmann’s film tomorrow. As such, we have decided to add a bit of 1920’s flair to our wardrobe and styling in the hope of looking half as enchanting as the alluring Daisy Buchanan.

To create the bewitching look of Jazz Age makeup focus on smoky eyes, full luscious lashes, a defined brow, a boldly-stained lip, and a cheek flushed from dancing. If you’d like to follow in Carey Mulligan’s beauty footsteps we recommend using M.A.C. lipstick in Ruby Woo-a shade used in the film. If you have short hair you are good to go in terms of the hairstyles of the roaring ‘20s. For those of you with longer manes, you can pretend to have a bob for the night if you curl hair in 1-inch sections and then pin it up for a haphazardly glamorous look.
